Life gets busy, and sometimes we don’t have time to do the things we know we need to do. While sure, its not a huge deal if you miss a trip to the gym once in a while, or you put off that text to your friend for another day, but skipping your semi-annual dental exam and cleaning can cause a long list of problems besides dirty teeth. Here’s why no matter how busy life gets you should always make time for the dentist!

Oral Cancer Screenings

When you visit your dentist, in addition to your cleaning, part of your exam includes an oral cancer screening. This only takes a few minutes and is completely painless, but it could save your life. Failure to visit the dentist regularly could mean they miss an important change in your oral health, such as the appearance of cancer.

Tooth Troubles

Sometimes you can just tell something is wrong with your tooth. It can hurt, have a crack, or have a brown spot. These are all telltale signs that you need to see the dentist, stat. But what happens when you can’t see the problem yourself? Often cavities aren’t visible to the untrained eye, and not every tooth infection is painful. Even wisdom teeth can form beneath the gums and become impacted without you ever knowing they’re there. Regular visits to your dentist can help spot these dangers before they get worse, protecting your smile and preventing pain.

Gum Disease

Did you know that gum disease is one of the most common conditions in the world? In fact, it is estimated that about 90 percent of all adults on earth have some stage of gum disease. Thankfully, gum disease is preventable, and it’s even reversible in its early stages. Unfortunately, however, if not treated it can cause you to lose gum tissue, your teeth, and even portions of your jawbone. Regular dental exams can alert your dentist to any stage of gum disease, so they can help you reverse it before it becomes periodontal disease or treat it before it causes you to lose your teeth!

A Healthier, Happier Smile

Finally, a healthy happy smile is your dentist’s number one goal. If you don’t attend your regular cleanings and exams, your teeth could be sporting discoloration due to tartar buildup. Attending your semi-annual appointments allows your dental team to help you put your best teeth forward, so they not only feel great, but they look great too!

Remember, life will probably always be busy, but that doesn’t mean you’re safe to skip out on potentially-lifesaving preventive care. Don’t put your health at risk by avoiding the dentist. Schedule your semi-annual exam and cleaning today!
